C-Section is the Most Common Major Surgery Performed in the United States. And Most Moms Are Left to Figure Out Postpartum Care on Their Own.

One in three babies in the U.S. is delivered by cesarean section. That is 1.2 million surgeries per year — each one involving dissection through 7 layers of abdominal tissue, disruption of the linea alba, potential pelvic nerve involvement, and a postpartum recovery that is profoundly more complex than most clinical training prepares us for.

Yet the standard of care after cesarean birth remains woefully inconsistent. Patients are discharged with instructions to "avoid lifting over 10 pounds" and a 6-week follow-up appointment. No structured rehabilitation plan. No scar management protocol. No pelvic floor guidance. No return to exercise framework.

As a result, your clients show up in your clinic weeks, months, even years after their cesarean with:

  • Painful, hypersensitive, or immobile scar tissue they've never been taught to address

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction they didn't realize was connected to their cesarean

  • Diastasis recti that wasn't identified or rehabilitated postpartum

  • Core weakness they've been trying to "just work through" at the gym

  • A c-section shelf they don't understand and don't know how to improve

  • Emotional trauma attached to their birth experience that's never been acknowledged in a clinical context

Introducing the Cesarean Recovery &

Safe Return to Exercise Clinical Professional Guide

By Dr. Lashonda Jones, PT, DPT, CPT, PPCES

— Physical Therapist, Certified Personal Trainer, Pre & Postnatal Exercise Specialist, and C-Section Mom

Not your basic PDF guide...

This is not a general postpartum resource adapted for professionals. This is a purpose-built clinical reference guide designed from the ground up for the rehabilitation, fitness and medical professionals working with cesarean birth clients

It gives you a structured, evidence-informed, phase-based framework covering every stage of the cesarean recovery journey — from pre-surgical preparation through return to running and sport — including the clinical tools, assessment protocols, patient education templates, and interdisciplinary referral guidance you need to deliver genuinely comprehensive care.

What's Inside the Clinical Guide

20 Comprehensive Clinical Sections Including:

  • Clinical Intake & Assessment Framework: A structured intake checklist covering surgical history, symptom profile, psychosocial factors, and return-to-exercise readiness screening — so you never miss a critical variable at first contact.

  • Phase-Based Recovery Timelines: Week-by-week clinical reference from Weeks 1–2 through 12+ months, with individualization guidance, progression criteria, and red flags for each phase.

  • Pre-Surgical Preparation Protocol: Clinical objectives and patient education tools for planned cesarean clients — including the questions your clients should be asking their surgeon before delivery.

  • Diastasis Recti Assessment & Rehabilitation Protocol: Clinical assessment technique, interpretation guidance, and a rehabilitation framework specific to the post-cesarean linea alba.

  • Pelvic Floor Assessment & Treatment Considerations: Clinical presentations by category (hypotonic, hypertonic, prolapse, pelvic girdle pain), treatment approaches, and referral thresholds.

  • Return to Exercise Protocol: A progressive 5-stage framework with clinical readiness screening criteria, modification and progression principles, and exercise guidance by phase.

  • Return to Running & High-Impact Activity: Readiness criteria, progressive return-to-running framework, and clinical referral guidance for the athlete or active client.

  • Acute Recovery Clinical Guidelines (Weeks 1–6): What to monitor, what to treat, what to escalate, and what to educate during the most critical healing window.

  • Scar Tissue Management Protocol: A complete clinical framework for desensitization, indirect mobilization, direct scar massage, myofascial cupping, dry needling, and silicone therapy — with precautions, contraindications, timing criteria, and technique guidance

  • C-Section Shelf & Pannus: Clinical explanation of contributing factors and a structured interdisciplinary treatment approach.

  • Return to Running & High-Impact Activity: Readiness criteria, progressive return-to-running framework, and clinical referral guidance for the athlete or active client.

  • Interdisciplinary Referral Pathway Guide: A quick-reference chart for when to refer to OB, pelvic floor PT, mental health, nutrition, orthopedic PT, and more.

  • Documentation & Goal-Setting Guidance: Suggested outcome measures, SMART goal examples by phase, and session progression tracking tools.

  • Patient Education Handout Templates: Three print-ready client-facing handouts covering weekly recovery focus, incision care, and scar desensitization — ready to use in your practice immediately.

  • Clinical FAQs & Patient Education Talking Points: Professional-level answers to the questions your clients ask most, formatted as both clinical reference and patient education scripts.

  • Clinician-Recommended Client Resource List: Recovery poduct recommendations organized by phase with clinical rationale — ready to share with clients.

About Dr. Lashonda Jones, PT, DPT, CPT, PPCES

Dr. Lashonda Jones is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Certified Personal Trainer, Pre & Postnatal Exercise Specialist with 20 years of clinical experience in orthopedic , pelvic and postpartum rehabilitation. She is the founder of Core Elevation Fitness and Wellness, Inc. and the creator of the original Cesarean Birth Recovery & Safe Return to Exercise Guide for patients.

She is also a cesarean mother.

When her second child was delivered by unplanned cesarean section, Dr. Jones found herself — even as a physical therapist — without a structured clinical roadmap for her own recovery. She was shocked to discover how little guidance existed, even for a healthcare professional who knew exactly what to look for.

That experience became the foundation of her life's work in cesarean rehabilitation. She built the patient guide she wished she'd had. Then she built this clinical version — because the professionals treating these patients deserve the same quality of guidance they give their clients.

"I deserved better. Your patients deserve better. And you deserve the clinical tools to give it to them." — Dr. Lashonda Jones
